Growing up I didn’t think much of the type of person I wanted to be. I also didn’t thank my mom for 22 years of selfless love. For Mom embodies the unconditional love that my mom has given me growing up and continues to show throughout my life. This is a thank you as I graduate at Ohio University and start a life of my own and a tribute to the type of person she is on the inside. My mom is someone who will selflessly loves her children, her family, and even the animals around her. She has tasked herself with feeding the deer dinner every night during the winter and calls herself, “grandma,” to my cat and my sister’s dog. She is the type of person to put back the pair of shoes she so desperately needs cause you commented, “That’s a cute sweater,” regardless if you tell her to get the shoes. I’ve realized that she is truly selfless and compassionate and through digital photography, I’ve captured moments that highlight these qualities within my mom.
I’ve chosen digital photography for two specific reasons. One reason being that photography sparks joy and excitement inside of me. When I came to OU I was majoring in graphic design and when I picked up a camera it immediately made me smile. The second reason being I find joy and fulfillment taking photos of others and showing my subjects how beautiful they truly are.
My thesis combines my love for photography and my mom - a celebration of both influences. I wanted to capture my mother’s beauty as I see her as she struggles with self confidence. I was highly inspired by the high contrast in chiaroscuro photography which was commonly used in the paintings of Rembrandt or Caravaggio.
